Lucania is believed to derive from the land of wolves or the land of light. The Lucanian Dolomites are a mountainous relief of great natural interest, which in the heart of Basilicata characterises the landscape with spectacular spires and silhouettes that have suggested imaginative names such as the golden eagle, the anvil, the great mother, the owl. Melfi, Venosa, the Lakes of Monticchio, Lagopesole and Acerenza are also worth a visit.
