Casole d'Elsa (Siena)
Perched on a hillside populated by green forests and surrounded by lush vineyards, the Relais La Suvera enjoys an enviable view over the Senese Chianti valley. A few kilometres from the medieval town of Colle Val d'Elsa, and just 28 km from Siena, is conveniently located for those wishing to spend a holiday immersed in an idyllic natural peace, but not deprived of the opportunity to engage in cultural activities or sports.
The building has ancient origins, in fact it dates back to medieval times. It was the castle of the nobility of Siena, owned by the Countess Ava Matilde de Franzosi, related with the King of France Clovis. It is supposed, then, that the name derives precisely from the the French word “suverraine”, the sovereign. After a series of vicissitudes, the residence was donated by the Signoria of Siena to Pope Julius II, to whom we owe the soul and the appearance of the typical Renaissance palace. Indeed, he gave the architect Baldassare Peruzzi the task of creating harmony between the severity of the medieval residence and the sumptuous richness of the Renaissance style. After several acquisitions and successions, finally the castle became property of the Marquis Ricci, who turned this home into a luxury hotel of great cultural appeal.
The Relais La Suvera looks like a small village where the Villa Papale is the central pivot. Around it there is the church dedicated to San Carlo Borromeo which is open to the guests, and other buildings which have arisen over the centuries. It is enhanced by a wonderful and extensive Italian garden, with statues, fountains and leafy trees: a secluded corner of the residence in which to enjoy unforgettable moments of peace and intimacy. This hotel is an impressive architectural structure of great cultural charm where the ancient and the modern merge harmoniously. Ideal for a romantic getaway from the chaotic reality.
The Relais La Suvera has 36 rooms in total: 7 Suites and 5 Deluxe double rooms located in the Villa Papale, all with a history setting; 5 Suites and 19 double rooms (Classic, Superior, Junior Suite) located in the old stables and in the farm. All rooms are elegantly furnished with antiques from the private collection of the owners. The accommodations of La Suvera are much more than normal rooms: they are an open page on the past history of this mansion. In the Papal villa every room has a special name and each is tied to the story of a historical personage, whose memories have been used to enrich the furnishing. The sumptuous suite Marie Antoinette, decorated with pink and gold colours and featuring a canopy bed and tapestries with ornamental French patterns, will bring you back to the splendour of the ancient court of France of the 1700s. While in the suite of the Duke of Genoa, dedicated to the master of the Piemontese army of Charles Albert, you can sleep in his camp canopy bed surmounted by a crown. The two bedside tables are very particular because they have been obtained from two war drums. All rooms are equipped with all the modern comforts: minibar, hairdryer, television with LCD screen, satellite channels and SKY TV, Wi-Fi connection, safe.
The owners have thought of meeting all the needs of their modern travellers by creating a modern health club, which stands up for its particular environment. In fact it is located in the medieval part of the Villa La Suvera and it carries with it the charm of the old mixed with the luxury of the new generation equipments. It has a hydro massage bathtub, in the room once used as a cistern, with hygienically treated water heated to 38 º, a turkish bath, a small fitness centre and a relaxation area where you can indulge being pampered by a cup of biological tea or simply chill out. The resort also offers a wide range of massages (Swedish massage, aroma therapy massage, reflexology) and treatments for face and body with natural products. The hotel Suvera takes care of not only of your physical but also of your spiritual well-being.
The Relais La Suvera offers its guests an elegant restaurant “L'Oliviera”, located in the old mill of the ‘700, with linen curtains and tablecloths, murals in Egyptian style, baroque style chandeliers and a lovely fireplace. The restaurant is used for the rich breakfast buffet and in the evening is available with reservation for romantic candlelight dinners on the rooftop terrace overlooking the Villa Papale. It proposes refined dishes of the typical Tuscan and Italian cuisine, accompanied by fine wines produced on the estate La Suvera.
In the informal atmosphere of the Bar dei Limoni (of the lemons) it is possible to enjoy an excellent light lunch under the shadow of lemons and limes on the terrace beside the pool. This area is particularly striking during the sunset hours, when you can enjoy a good glass of wine almost enchanted from the delightful scenery offered by the surrounding nature.
